Gazzetta dello Sport were very complimentary towards referee Paolo Tagliavento’s performance last night in Inter-Fiorentina. Even in the new age of VAR, Tagliavento still refereed the match with personality. Tagliavento called upon VAR for help on two occasions, both of which were calls for penalties. Tagliavento rightly awarded Mauro Icardi with a penalty after he was impeded by Davide Astori. He also rightly declined Fiorentina’s calls for a penalty up the other end as Giovanni Simeone went down. The first decision came as a result of VAR while the second use of VAR was simply to confirm what he had already called, no penalty.
