Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis could be set for a difficult summer, with uncertainty surrounding the future of key players such as Pepe Reina, Faouzi Ghoulam, Lorenzo Insigne and Dries Mertens. In fact, rumours of Inter’s interest in the Belgian attacker have indeed resurfaced over the past few days.

At the moment, it seems unlikely that Mertens will sign a new contract with the Partenopei. The main problem seems to be that De Laurentiis would like to insert a €50 million release clause, only valid for foreign clubs. Even in today’s market, this seems absurd for a player who will turn 30 on May 6.

There is interest from Chinese Super League clubs, but Inter also remain keen. The Nerazurri’s new project could prove to be decisive in persuading the former PSV Eindhoven winger to join. Suning would also guarantee him a higher salary than the €2.5 million per season Napoli are currently offering.
