The work of Stefano Pioli has been more than successful and the major reason for that is the offensive wings. Corriere dello Sport explains why: “Great contribution from Perisic, Candreva and Eder. Inter doesn’t have a back-up to Icardi but that doesn’t matter when the wingers are dangerous and score goals. This wasn’t the case when De Boer was in charge, then the wingers were only…wingers. De Boer wanted them to stay in position, a bit back, with the only assignment being to serve Icardi with crosses. This is one of the reasons that Icardi doesn’t score that much as he did in the beginning of the season. The downside with that type of playing was that Maurito often found himself alone in the box and for the defenders it was easy to predict”.

With Pioli a complete change of tactics has occurred, which favours wingers to move themselves into the box: “Today, Inter has a tactic that starts with the wingers, also thanks to the overlapping of the full backs, and allows them to move into the box and take the shots.”
