Inter Milan vice-president Javier Zanetti is fully expected that Inter captain and fellow compatriot Mauro Icardi will mature into a great leader for the club. Despite fellow criticism and controversy after given the armband this season, that includes his controversial autobiography, the former captain is hoping that he can go over that hurdle and become a great captain like he was during his time in Italy.

“Initially, when he learned he’d be wearing the armband he became very excited,” Zanetti said. “He did calm down, though, he had a kind of nervous excitement. Hopefully, he’ll be worthy of the trust of his Coaches and teammates, it takes a process of adaptation.”

Zanetti also hopes that his role in the office will be as influential as his role on the pitch as a player. “As Vice President, I’ve had to learn a lot of new aspects, which is why I enrolled in specific courses and I’m also learning from more experienced people.

“I’d like to stay in close contact with Suning to be more and more useful to the management of the club.”
