Arriving on the recommendation of club legend Ronaldo, there was a lot expected from Gilberto Da Silva Melo when he arrived in the middle of the 1999-00 season. Unfortunately for Gilberto, things never quite worked out as perhaps planned and he made just two appearances before returning to Brazil with Vasco da Gama. In an interview with UOL Esporte, he reveals what happened: “I didn’t adapt to Italian life, It went bad but I don’t know why. Physically I was not bad, I arrived at Inter in January with a side not doing well in the league and inside [the dressing room] there was a group of players with strong egos. Ronaldo played but he had several injuries. there were also Ivan Zamorano, Gianluca Pagliuca, Roberto Baggio, Aron Winter, people who attracted attention on them. When I arrived Zè Elias said to me “stay with because today the animal bites” because Inter had lost to Bologna. Everyone was screaming and I didn’t understand nothing. The coach was Mircea Lucescu who likes Brazilian players but that year was not good for me.”
