Interviewed on Inter Channel after the match, Frank de Boer claimed that the victory with Southampton was crucial:

“Less possession? A choice or you play compact or you go to press up. We chose to stay compact, I want to see a team that plays with a lot of discipline, today I saw a team with a big heart and a lot of discipline. For me this is very important. We must definitely improve, especially with the ball, not good in the first half, then better and also a great goal by Candreva. The team had discipline, but after the expulsion went in trouble. We have a fantastic goalkeeper, he proved it today, he is one of the best in the world for me.”

“We must learn from our games, today we played well but not for the full 90 minutes. Perhaps only with Juventus we played a disciplined game throughout the match. In the other matches, were only 70 minutes for example. We have to change. Today we decided to stay compact, to press when needed, but first we had to be compact and then our chances would come. Southampton is physically stronger than us. What is lacking in the team? We need to keep our discipline for the whole game, not just for a part. We need to improve in this.”
