Javier Zanetti at the margin at Inter? To get an opinion on the current moment the Tractor is going through the crew at Tuttomercatoweb.com interviewed former Inter coach Gigi Simoni.

Mister, you know Zanetti well. What have you been able to make out of this as an outsider?

“It had never happened before, but on the other hand he’d never had an injury like that before either. It is always a delicate thing, I don’t know if he is completely healed. The fact of not seeing him play gives a sense of wonder, I remember him as a player of great performance that gives the team great charge. I don’t know how his fitness is or how he is doing, it is sad that a person like him had to go through this difficult moment when it comes to his well-being.”

In your opinion is there really a possibility that il Capitano could end his career somewhere else?

“I haven’t heard from him in a long time, I don’t know how he is doing. If he is feeling well he could surely have the will to continue playing, should they not keep him if he could do that elsewhere. He definitely deserves a role in the club but we need to see what Thohir thinks about it. This season Inter doesn’t have a lot to ask for, the coach is rightly focused on building a team for the future and not for the present. Zanetti is nearly 40 years old and can obviously not be a player to count on in the long run. When I’ve seen him I’ve always seen a valid player. A player that never grows old.”

What do you think of the team right now, struggling to score and get results?

“It is a team that needs rebuilding. Now they’ve bought some players but it is not a team that is ready for the goals that a team like Inter should aim for. When building a team you need to make some sacrifices, and in this sense you can understand the sacrifice of a player like Zanetti as well.”
