Gian Piero Gasperini’s time as coach at Inter was cut very short. Now he’s the coach for Genoa and ahead of Sunday’s match at Marassi, he was interviewed by La Repubblica. Other than the obvious bitterness over the short time at Inter he also diminished Inter’s recent history: “The football I played was rejected immediately. The president, the criticism and the environment in general felt that it was irresponsible wishful thinking of me to want to play with three defenders. But after Mourinho’s era, it was necessary to make a change and a different way to play seemed to me to be the best way to do it, and now Mazzarri actually plays with a defense of three. The new coach has a difficult time? Inter are a great team and, given the way they play, I saw them play on a level with Juventus. Something has gone wrong, but it’s also true that the first matches went into a stratospheric pace.”

But why is it so hard to win with Inter? Gasperini has a theory: “Unlike in AC Milan a concept of team play has never existed. Many superstars arrived, from Ronaldo and so on, which meant that they focused on the individual and on the big individuality. But before Mourinho, even Marcello Lippi failed. José Mourinho, above all, won with regard to what he acquired to the pitch and the fact that he could determine the line. I failed to get Rodrigo Palacio and avoided that Thiago Motta left. He had Ibrahimovic sold and with these sales, he rebuilt the team, signed Eto’o, Milito, Thiago Motta, Wesley Sneijder and Lucio.”

Genoa’s coach ended with a cutting remark about Inter’s recent successes: “The real turning point for Inter came through Calciopoli which destroyed Juventus, without it Inter would have continued without winning. After Mourinho, the trend has returned to normal, but a coach like Rafael Benitez deserved greater credibility.”
