In an interview with Inter Channel and the program Internos, Mateo Kovacic talked about his first year in Italy.

Have you studied Italian?

“I studied only for three days, then I talked to Juan Jesus, with Samir…”

What impression have you gotten of Italy? Do you like Milan?

“I really like Milan, I live well here. There are many Croats who go to school here. And the food is good, I really like pasta and pizza.”

And what do you think about Italian football?

“I expected a tactical football that is very focused on defense. It isn’t easy to score here, in Spain and England, it is certainly different.”

There were many compliments for the Inter midfielder, as well as a quote from Dejan Stankovic: “You don’t see the thoroughbreds at the start, but rather at the finish.” Mateo talked about Drago and his role as head of the Serbian Federation: “He has a very important role, not just for Serbia, but also for Croatia.”

He then spoke of his idols: “When I was a kid it was a Croatian player, Robert Prosinečki. He was a withdrawn striker, like Jovetic, and he had quite a physique.”

Kovacic then explained what areas of his game need improvement: “There are a lot of things. With coach Mazzarri I work a lot in defence, but I also want to get off more shots and score more goals. I want to improve in defence as well as in other areas. In the last match I got off a couple of shots on goal. The coach told me to do it when I’m in that part of the pitch because we’re all looking to score and I still haven’t bagged one yet. Is this weighing on me? Yes, a bit… [smiling]”
