After having watched his side beat Genoa in their opening game of the season at the San Siro, a pleased Walter Mazzarri was interviewed by Sky Italia: “Todays win aside, our last win at home in the league came 4 and a half months ago, as well as loosing many matches. Maybe we needed to go through an exorcism in order to lose this psychosis too, which incidentally was the reason why I prioritized defensive safety. The substitutions were pre-programmed, Kovacic is a player of such a high quality, which I love to be able to throw on when everyone is tired. We didn’t give Genoa a lot today, the team is growing and we’re very balanced which is precisely what we need.”
“Our wingers really grew with the task both of them. I felt a sense of satisfaction after the first goal, because the movement leading up to the goal shows that you have the pleayers with you. This trip to America meant that I had very little time to work with the team, I lost around 10 days. Many things today weren’t to my liking, especially when Genoa stole the ball of us. After the first half we played a lot better, everything was much better. It was good.”
“Eto´o? You know me, I don’t discuss the transfermarket. He’s a fantastic player, we all know this. But I’m happy with the players I’ve got. Which are of the team needs to be strengthened? I’m not saying anything. I think Icardi was really good today. It’s important that we continue on this track with the same attitude that we had today, without starting to suffer.
Finally Mazzarri was asked about how well Inter holds up when compared to the other topp teams in the league: “Juve have stregthened their team, we know this league. But Inter has grown faster that I epected. After the goal it was as what had been blocking us mentally disappeared and we started to produce some high-quality football. It wasn’t the right match or time to change strategy.”
