During training camp, his position as a crowd favorite has been confirmed and when Jonathan was interviewed by Inter Channel’s Roberto Scarpini he expressed his delight at the affection from the fans: “I think this is a demonstration of the confidence the fans have for my work. I’m happy, I work well and hope to do better than I did the last few years, like the whole Inter. Fans must believe in this.”
This affection comes after a difficult start, and Jonathan has been struggling to turn the supporters’ skepticism, but how has he done it? “According to me it is primarily through hard work. It hasn’t been easy for me the last few years, I was never allowed to make any mistakes. But I’ve also had to be very humble, I’ve always worked hard. When I didn’t play, I tried to work as well as possible and when I got the chance to play I always gave my best. Slowly but surely I started to play better. The goal against Roma was beautiful, but the play that led to the goal was even more beautiful. I think the fans have seen that I’ve been sure that I was still able to play for the chance at Inter. Perhaps the interaction with the teammates was missing, but I think it has improved and I think it will be even better this season.”
From Marco Branca and Piero Ausilio who wanted him at Inter, the confidence has always been there: “Those two are both good people as well as directors and they have made me feel this confidence. To do well a player always requires a certain continuity, at least five games, to find the confidence and the rhythm. That’s what happened to me in the end. If I hadn’t been injured, I might have done even better. Now the shoulder’s in place and I hope to do well, with the confidence from the fans that is important to us all. We come from a very difficult season, they have to stand by our side.”
